Thurston's Presidency

In order to fully understand the contrast between Matilda Calder Thurston and Wu Yi-Fang, it is helpful to trace their narratives at Ginling back to the beginning. For Thurston, this means looking back at her marriage and initial move to China. For Wu, this means looking at her school years under Thurston’s regime. Reconstructing the story in this way shows the progression of events that lead each woman to act a certain way under certain circumstances. Even more interestingly, however, it shows how Thurston’s education system came to produce a star pupil, namely Wu Yi-Fang, and how Wu took Thurston’s goals and made them her own.
