Chen was from Sichuan originally, and attended a progressive school in Chengdu. She was politically active in her youth, and supported Nationalist ideals. After Ginling, she worked at the Y.W.C.A. in Shanghai from 1922-1925. In 1925 she taught at Union Girls School, Hangzhou. Chen got her MA at the Teachers College Columbia University in 1927, and her MS in 1928. She lived in the International House during her time there. From 1928-1934, she taught hygiene back at Gingling. In 1932 she helped start a soup kitchen for natural disaster refugees and served on an anti-malaria committee.In 1934 she moved to work at Central University in Nanjing. Later she lived in Chongqing.
