Ren was from Zhenjiang (Chinkiang), Jiangsu (Kiangsu). She received the Barbour Scholarship and went to the University of Michigan from 1923-1928 to get her M.D. In 1929, she interned as a doctor at a hospital in St. Louis. She ended up returning to China to work as a doctor at W. S. Fu's Hospital in Shanghai.
