Liu was from Xuzhou (Tsüchow), Jiangsu (Kiangsu). She studied at the University of Michigan from 1919-1924 to get her M.D. after receiving the Barbour Scholarship. She came back to Ginling after practicing medicine in Shanghai to be a college physician and general manager of a summer school on Ginling's campus in 1927. She was also involved in Ginling’s Board of Control. In 1928, she was a doctor at what was then known as Tinghai Hospital in Dinghai (Tinghai), Zhejiang (Chekiang). She then moved to Hangzhao (Hangchow) to work as a doctor at the then Hangchow Mission Hospital in 1929. She ended up with a longer position at Concord Women’s Hospital in Shanghai in the 1930s and 40s.
